Role description
We are seeking a contractor to serve as a liaison between technical teams and business stakeholders, ensuring that complex metadata, governance, and reporting concepts are translated into clear, actionable documentation for an enterprise data catalog ("Geneβ). This role focuses on consolidating technical details into business-friendly language, improving metadata completeness, and advancing governance initiatives across core data domains.

What You'll Do
β’ Interpret and simplify technical concepts related to data assets, data lineage, and reporting logic for inclusion in the enterprise data catalog.
β’ Partner with technical teams to gather details on data sources, transformations, and quality checks, including translating technical data rules for business and operational users.
β’ Consolidate and summarize data rules for core domains (e.g., patient, provider) to make them easy to find and understand.
β’ Define documentation standards and processes required to certify data.
β’ Create clear, user-friendly descriptions that explain complex data processes in business-friendly language.
β’ Ensure metadata and definitions are consistent, accurate, and complete across the data catalog.
β’ Identify documentation gaps and work with teams to remediate them.
β’ Document core and semantic tables in production in partnership with Data Engineering and Data Analytics teams.
β’ Help document enterprise metrics and build a framework to link related/similar metrics; support cleanup/retirement of metrics lacking ownership.
β’ Partner with Research and Privacy teams to document guidelines for handling PHI/PII when sharing data externally.
β’ Create and maintain data policies for restricted data; link role-specific policies to broader enterprise policies to ensure they're actionable.
β’ Support and operationalize Data Retention policies aligned to organizational standards.
β’ Develop artifacts that make data initiatives more accessible and understandable for both technical and business teams.
Required Qualifications
β’ Bachelor's degree (required)
β’ Strong understanding of data management principles (data quality, metadata, reporting concepts)
β’ Strong ability to translate technical language into clear, concise, accessible documentation
β’ Excellent communication and collaboration skills across technical and business teams
β’ Experience writing technical documentation
Preferred / Nice-to-Have
β’ 4β6 years in data governance / data management organizations
β’ 2β3 years using SQL and/or Python tools
β’ 1β2 years using data catalog tools
β’ Experience with data catalogs / metadata tools (e.g., Alation) is a plus
β’ Familiarity with data governance frameworks and reporting tools is a plus
β’ Data quality tooling (e.g., Experian, Collibra) is a plus
β’ Healthcare experience is a plus; Epic experience is a plus
β’ Preferred degree in clinical informatics, sciences, math, statistics, healthcare management, or other healthcare-related field
