Role description
About the Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Data Protection Officer (DPO) to take the lead on all data protection matters across a large public sector organisation and affiliated education services.
This role is central to maintaining a strong data protection culture and compliance framework. You'll be responsible for ensuring full adherence to UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018, managing data breaches, responding to requests, and developing internal policies and training programmes.
Key Responsibilities
Act as the organisation’s Data Protection Officer in line with statutory requirements
Monitor compliance with UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018
Investigate and report on data breaches and advise on appropriate responses
Manage SARs (Subject Access Requests), DPIAs, and FOI/EIR responses
Maintain the corporate Record of Processing Activities (ROPA)
Review and update policies, privacy notices, and data sharing agreements
Liaise with regulatory bodies including the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO)
Develop and deliver in-house Data Protection Level 1 training for staff
Promote data protection awareness across all departments and service areas
Advise on high-risk data processing and mitigation measures
Produce reports, dashboards, and risk logs for senior stakeholders
Candidate RequirementsEssential
Minimum 3 years’ experience in a similar data protection role
Recognised Data Protection qualification (e.g. CIPP/E, CIPM, BCS Certificate, ISACA, CISSP)
Strong understanding of data privacy laws (UK GDPR, DPA 2018, PECR, FOIA, EIR)
Experience managing data breaches, SARs, DPIAs, FOIs and internal investigations
Comfortable providing advice to senior leaders and operational teams
Proficient in Microsoft 365 and data governance platforms
Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities
Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
Desirable
Experience in a public sector, healthcare, or education setting
Familiarity with handling regulatory audits or ICO inspections
Experience delivering internal data protection training to non-specialist audiences
Professional memberships (e.g. IAPP, NADPO, IRMS)
Additional Information
This role requires the successful candidate to deliver Data Protection Level 1 training to employees
