Help shape the future of access to nature. We’re looking for a Data Scientist to lead the development of forecasting models that inform how millions of people experience the National Trust’s open spaces.
It’s a unique chance to apply your technical expertise to a high-impact project that supports strategic decisions aimed at improving access to nature for everyone.
You’ll lead the evolution of our machine learning model by improving its accuracy, expanding its data sources, and ensuring it delivers actionable insights across the organisation.
We’re a supportive and forward-thinking data team that values curiosity, collaboration, and continuous learning.
Internally this role is known as Data Engineer.
What it's like to work here:As a Data Scientist at the National Trust, you’ll deliver robust visitor number forecasts to hundreds of open spaces. These insights will inform event planning, business cases for outdoor improvements, marketing campaign evaluation, and strategic initiatives such as our ambition to end unequal access. This position is becoming increasingly influential in shaping strategic decisions across the organisation.
The role requires experience in Python-based modelling, operational workflows, and cloud infrastructure. It would suit an experienced Data Scientist or Machine Learning Engineer. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly are essential, as you’ll work closely with internal and external stakeholders to challenge, negotiate, and build consensus on cost-effective solutions.
Your contractual location will be our head office in Swindon and there will be an expectation for you to attend the office. However, there is flexibility on where you are based at other times. You will be required to work at a National Trust location for 40-60% of your working week. This will be discussed in more detail at interview.
What you'll be doing:You’ll work closely with the Head of Data in the Strategy Management Unit. You’ll collaborate with a diverse group of data, IT, and project professionals across the organisation.
On a day-to-day basis, you will be responsible for the lifecycle of our visitor forecasting tool.
You’ll use your Python and SQL skills to manage and enhance our visitor forecasting model algorithms.
You will manage your CI/CD pipeline to collect, clean and ingest new data sources, and use your cloud infrastructure knowledge to monitor and optimise the platform environments.
You’ll understand the reporting and insight requirements of your stakeholders, maintaining a backlog of improvements and engage with IT colleagues to schedule changes, and you’ll work with your project team to maintain and grow data streams from hundreds of NT sites.
Who we're looking forWe’re looking for someone with a Data Science or Machine Learning Engineering background, with experience of handling large data sets and machine learning models.
We will shortlist against the following technical criteria:
A degree in data science, machine learning, or a related discipline, with equivalent professional experience also considered.
Demonstratable hands-on experience, including: Working with large datasets and creating and managing data pipelines
Applying regression modelling, time-series analysis, and anomaly detection
Programming proficiency in Python or R with libraries such as Pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn, Darts, SHAP.
Knowledge of deploying models on cloud platforms (Azure ML and Snowflake preferred but not essential)
Experience developing or integrating APIs is a plus.
Proactive problem-solving skills with a hands-on approach.
A confident communicator and relationship builder who can explain complex processes to a variety of stakeholders.
