Role description
Job Title: Data Scientist in the life sciences space (Remote, Try/Buy Opportunity)
Job Type: Contract-to-Hire (Try/Buy)
Location: Remote (US-based)
Salary: 150K to 180K
About the Opportunity:
A fast-growing consulting and technology firm specializing in data-driven solutions for the clinical research, biotechnology, and life sciences industries is seeking a skilled Data Scientist for a unique try/buy engagement. This role offers the chance to showcase your expertise in real-world, high-impact projects before converting to a permanent position.
As a Data Scientist, you will work closely with cross-functional teams—including clinical experts, data engineers, and product managers—to design, build, and deploy models and analytics solutions that accelerate research, optimize clinical trials, and support data-driven decision-making in regulated environments.
Key Responsibilities:
• Design and execute complex SQL queries, views and functions for large-scale data analysis and reporting.
• Develop, fine-tune, and implement NLP and LLM-based solutions, such as document summarization, text classification and semantic search.
• Build robust data pipelines and AI/ML workflows using Python (Pandas, Scikit-learn, Transformers, etc.).
• Leverage AWS services (e.g., Lambda, SageMaker, S3, Glue) for model training, deployment, and data orchestration.
• Work with PostgreSQL to store, create views, create functions, query, and model structured data efficiently.
• Translate technical findings into actionable insights for business stakeholders in a clear, concise manner.
• Convert complex business needs into technical designs and machine learning applications, collaborating closely with product, engineering, and business teams.
• Monitor model performance, run A/B tests, and iterate on NLP and LLM models.
• Stay updated on the latest developments in NLP, generative AI, and machine learning.
Required Qualifications:
• 3+ years of experience in a data science, artificial intelligence, machine learning role.
• Advanced SQL proficiency, including performance tuning and complex joins.
• Strong Python coding skills, with hands-on experience in NLP libraries (e.g., Hugging Face Transformers, spaCy, NLTK).
• Demonstrated experience working with and integrating into LLMs (e.g., OpenAI GPT, Cohere, Claude) and prompt engineering.
• Experience developing and deploying NLP models for tasks such as named entity recognition, sentiment analysis, summarization, or question answering.
• Proficiency with AWS cloud services, especially SageMaker, Lambda, Glue, and S3.
• Strong working knowledge of PostgreSQL and relational databases.
• Proven ability to translate business goals into technical solutions and present results to non-technical audiences.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Master’s in Computer Science, Data Science, Computational Linguistics, or a related field.
• Experience with MLOps and model lifecycle management.
• Familiarity with orchestration and pipeline tools (e.g., Airflow, MLflow).
• Experience integrating NLP and LLM models into production systems or customer-facing tools.
• Strong data visualization and storytelling skills using tools like Tableau, Power BI, or Plotly.
What We Offer:
• A unique try/buy engagement: the opportunity to demonstrate your skills during a contract phase before potential full-time hire.
• Fully remote work with flexible scheduling.
• The chance to contribute to cutting-edge projects that impact patient outcomes and accelerate scientific innovation.
• A collaborative team environment at the intersection of data science and life sciences.
