Job Description
What you’ll be doing
Are you passionate about data science and the power of statistics to inform public debate and policymaking? Would you like to lead innovative projects that shape how data is used at the heart of democracy? The House of Commons Library is looking for a Data and Statistics Transformation Lead to drive forward our use of data science and help deliver impartial, high-quality statistical research for MPs and their teams.
This is a unique and exciting opportunity to join the Research and Information team. The team is home to the respected House of Commons Library and the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology. As part of our Social and General Statistics team, you’ll lead transformative projects to improve how we collect, analyse and present data. You’ll also provide expert briefings and data-driven insight across a broad range of policy areas from health and education to environment and demographics to support Members of Parliament in their vital work.
This role is offered on a hybrid working basis, with an expectation of you spending 40% of your time in the office.

Flexible working options that help you find a balance including enhanced maternity, paternity, shared parental and adoption leave, caring leave and alternative working patterns.
What we’re looking for
You can rapidly analyse large datasets using your experience of working with a range of data sources in practical professional contexts. You will also have experience of working with computational and code-based tools for processing data and building pipelines – preferably using R.
You have experience of using reliable, accurate and relevant information sources and research tools with the ability to assess their value using sound judgement.
You have the ability to explain complex information clearly and succinctly using your excellent written and oral communication skills. You can communicate demonstrating strict political impartiality and authority, and in line with the needs of the audience.
You can deal with a changing portfolio of work or cover for colleagues. You plan, prioritise and organise your workload to meet deadlines, and other competing demands. You can maintain high quality standards whilst working under pressure.
You work effectively as part of a team and build and maintain working relationships with a wide range of people.
