Role description
We are seeking a Databricks Data Specialist with proven expertise in Azure Databricks (PySpark), SQL, and Power BI to support the NCDIT-T Web Systems team. This role involves developing data pipelines, dashboards, and reports that transform complex datasets into actionable insights for business and technical stakeholders.
The specialist will collaborate with engineers, technical leads, and business partners to ensure data solutions are aligned with organizational goals, scalable, and adhere to best practices. The role requires strong hands-on technical capabilities combined with excellent communication skills to work effectively in a hybrid public-sector environment.
The Databricks Data Specialist will be responsible for:
Conduct in-depth data analysis, build data mappings, and ensure data quality, consistency, and integrity.
Leverage Databricks Spark SQL to analyze large datasets, writing efficient queries and transformations.
Design, develop, and deploy interactive dashboards using Databricks native visualization tools and Power BI.
Build and optimize Gold-layer data products to support APIs, dashboards, and UI tools.
Collaborate with data engineers on integration and transformation of diverse data sources into structured, analysis-ready formats.
Perform data modeling (dimensional, ER modeling, normalization/denormalization, or Data Vault).
Conduct statistical analysis, data mining, and machine learning to identify trends and drive business insights.
Develop predictive models and advanced analytics to solve business challenges.
Support requirements gathering, change management documentation, and design discussions.
Create comprehensive documentation for data pipelines, mappings, models, and dashboards.
Actively participate in planning and design with technical and business teams.
Expertise and/or Relevant Experience:
Required Skills - Databricks Data Specialist
M1. 3+ years of hands-on experience designing, deploying, and managing Azure Databricks solutions in enterprise environments.
M2. 3+ years of experience with SQL and Python, including advanced query writing and data transformation.
M3. Strong understanding of data science concepts, including statistical learning and machine learning algorithms.
M4. 3+ years of experience with data modeling techniques (dimensional modeling, ER modeling, Data Vault, normalization/denormalization).
M5. 5+ years of experience collaborating with cross-functional teams and translating business needs into scalable technical solutions.
M6. Excellent oral and written communication skills, with proven ability to convey complex technical insights to non-technical stakeholders.
M7. Candidate must currently reside in the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill, NC area.

D1. Databricks Data Analyst Associate Certification.
D2. Prior experience in state government or large-scale public-sector data projects.
