Together we are Trusted to Serve Scotland.
People Consultant (People Insights) - Fixed term / Secondment for up to 12 months
The purpose of the People Insights Team is to provide leaders at all levels with actionable and timely insights about working at Scottish Water, which will drive positive business outcomes. We aim to put the employee experience at the heart of what we do.
The Role
The People Insights team are currently the only team in the business with the access, skills and capability to run reports from our Corporate HR system, Workday. Over the next 12 months, we will be working to automate our core processes and services via the Workday Optimisation programme, and establish ourselves as a value add, data-driven Insights specialist team who can correlate information across multiple people data sources. In order to do this, we need to continue providing a high demand BAU service via our current ways of working, whilst we transform.
What You’ll Do
This is a great opportunity for someone with strong data analytics skills and an interest in people data to join and strengthen our small team. The role holder will build, create and where relevant export data from Workday to gather and analyse insights that will help inform data driven decision making for our People Plan.
Do you have the ability to manage large data sets, modelling and producing the right information in the right formats to share with the business? Do you have great attention to detail? Are you interested in working with digital tools that help us gather insights from our people? Are you comfortable handling sensitive data sets and applying GDPR policies appropriately?
Then maybe you are the perfect person to join our team to help us deliver this key activity.
Key accountabilities include ensuring scheduled reports run as planned: weekly, monthly, quarterly. You will hold timetabled reporting responsibility: weekly, monthly, quarterly, annually (including Government reporting and publicised packs). Your role will involve report auditing and validations through both scheduled and manual checks. You will support project works to improve Workday reporting and data availability, and apply cross-system reconciliation skills between Workday, Power BI, Oracle, Cornerstone, etc.
What You’ll Bring
You will respond to ad hoc reporting requests by creating and running new reports in Workday, analysing and interrogating the data to draw out key insights, and providing consultancy support to key stakeholders to interpret data requirements. You will be responsible for choosing relevant data sources and analysis (descriptive and predictive), and working with other SW Insights and Analytics functions to establish correlations and causality. Additionally, you will process Freedom of Information requests within legal timeframes and handle sensitive data, ensuring it is shared appropriately and in line with our GDPR and data security policies and processes.
Essential skills for this role include previous Workday systems and reporting experience (Report Writer, Calculated Fields). You must be a highly engaged team member with great attention to detail, with strong experience of complex data analysis and strong Excel skills including VLookups, Pivot Tables, and Excel formulas (such as nested formulae, SUMIF(S), INDEX, IF(S)). You should be experienced in preparing insightful reports using reporting and analysis tools, and have the ability to multi-task and work across multiple disciplines, showing flexibility as part of a small team and responding to tasks at pace.
Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills are essential, along with planning and organising, analytical and problem-solving abilities. You should be able to ‘join the dots’ and make connections, and demonstrate stakeholder management, curiosity and a learning mindset. Experience of applying GDPR to sensitive people-related data sets, data security, and governance policies is also required.
Looking out for you
While the work we do is important, we know it’s not the only thing that matters. That’s why we make sure you have everything you need to find a good work-life balance.
This role has some weekend working and standby requirements. But you’ll get plenty of time to recharge with 38 days of holiday every year (including public holidays). And you can even buy five more if you need a little extra time. You can also take time off to volunteer in your community.
When it comes to major life events we have family-friendly policies around adoption, maternity, and parental leave. And for the everyday? We embrace flexible working.
For your future, there’s our pension (the ‘know-what-you’ll-get-when-you-retire’ kind), and life assurance.
As for some nice extras? You can expect an annual company bonus. Not to mention access to SW Splash – handy rewards that can save you money on holidays, bills, and shopping.
The not-so-small print
This role will be a Grade 6. If you’re new to Scottish Water, you’ll join us on a starting salary of £33,560. Performance-driven pay progression will then allow you to move through the range to a maximum of £44,140.
Job offers at Scottish Water are conditional, and will be confirmed on completion of our pre-employment screening, e.g. referencing, criminal record checks, license checks, etc. These checks are conducted on our behalf by a third party. Don’t worry - we’ll ask your permission before starting these checks.
If you’re interested in this role – or know someone else who might be - we’ll be accepting applications until the 20th July 2025
A few final things worth knowing…
Research shows that some people avoid applying for jobs unless they can meet every single criteria. If you’re interested in this job, but don’t tick all the boxes, apply anyway! We hardly ever hire people who can do every part of a job from Day One. Everyone has a learning curve. So don’t rule yourself out!
Let us know if there are any changes we can make to our recruitment process to help you perform at your best. Lots of our people have disabilities or neurodiverse conditions (including some of our recruiters!). We're also aware that some people might be experiencing temporary challenges because of life events, like menopause. We’re very used to making adjustments, so please don’t be afraid to ask.
As part of our commitment to developing a flourishing Scotland, it’s important that all our employees are Scottish taxpayers. If you join us, your home address will need to be in Scotland. If you don’t already live here, you'll need to commit to moving here within your first three months.
Finally (finally!), candidates who haven’t submitted an application in the last 12 months will have their records removed from our recruitment database. You won’t need to do anything. Your data will be automatically deleted.
We’re here to help. Ask us anything at SWRecruitment@ScottishWater.co.uk
