The ideal candidate thinks architecturally, designs datasets for reuse and longevity, and avoids one-off solutions. The role requires proficiency in Python and SQL as primary working languages and Tableau for reporting. Core Competencies Data Engineering and Pipeline Development • Hands-on BigQuery expertise including dataset design, partitioning and clustering, materialized views, and cost optimization. • Proficiency with Cloud Composer for orchestrating production pipelines with schedules, retries, and dependencies. • Experience building and maintaining Vertex AI Pipelines for ML and large-scale transformations. • Advanced SQL including window functions, CTEs, recursive queries, and tuning. • Strong Python for transformation scripts, custom Airflow operators, API integrations, and automation. Data Architecture and Scalable Design • Design of layered architectures using Medallion, Dimensional Modeling, Data Vault, and targeted denormalization as appropriate. • Creation of modular, multi-purpose datasets with canonical models and shared dimensions. • Disciplined approach to table creation versus extension or views to prevent duplication and sprawl. • Adherence to best practices for naming, schema organization, documentation, and lifecycle management. Tableau Dashboard Development • End-to-end Tableau development from data source configuration and extract optimization to interactive visual design. • Translation of business questions into clear, intuitive visualizations for self-service. • Knowledge of performance tuning, published data sources, and server or cloud publishing workflows. • Alignment of upstream data modeling with downstream dashboard performance. Technical Stack • Cloud Platform: Google Cloud Platform (Google Cloud Platform) • Data Warehouse: BigQuery (advanced) • Orchestration: Cloud Composer / Apache Airflow • ML Pipelines: Vertex AI Pipelines • Visualization: Tableau (Desktop, Server/Cloud) • Languages: Python (advanced), SQL (advanced) • Infrastructure: Terraform (preferred), GCS, Cloud Functions • Version Control: Git / GitLab What Sets The Ideal Candidate Apart • Architecture-first thinking that prioritizes extension and reuse. • Efficiency over volume with minimal pipelines supporting broad use cases. • End-to-end ownership from ingestion to Tableau dashboards. • Pragmatic scalability that balances present needs with future growth. Experience And Qualifications • 5+ years in a data engineering role with substantive Google Cloud Platform and BigQuery experience. • Advanced proficiency in Python and SQL as daily working languages. • Demonstrated design and maintenance of shared, reusable data models at enterprise scale. • Familiarity with medallion, star schema, and Data Vault patterns. • Portfolio or examples of Tableau dashboards built on well-structured data layers. • Familiarity with CI/CD practices and infrastructure-as-code concepts. • Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills. Questions for Candidate Submit written answers with the resume. • How many Tableau dashboards have you built end to end, including the data layer, and how did you build them. • How familiar are you with Cloud Composer. When would you use it over a scheduled notebook or a cron job. • Describe an example where you combined data from multiple sources into a single dataset for reporting. How did you decide to structure it. Top Resume Review Criteria • Hands-on experience with SQL, Python, Google Cloud Platform, BigQuery, Cloud Composer, GCS, Cloud Functions, and Jupyter notebooks demonstrated through pipeline builds, dataset design, or architecture decisions. • Evidence of scalable architecture thinking including reusable models, layered architectures, and consolidation over one-off projects. • Tableau dashboard development paired with data modeling, showing ownership of both the data layer and the visualization.
