Role description
The Role We’re looking for a Senior Data Scientist to join our Applied Research Centre (ARC) and help shape how cutting-edge AI and Deep Learning are applied across Defence & National Security. This role is all about tackling meaningful, real-world challenges with creativity and rigour; working closely with government partners to unpack complex problems, explore emerging technologies, and develop proof-of-concept solutions that make a genuine impact. You’ll work across diverse data types, lead exploratory research projects and turn academic breakthroughs into practical, reproducible outcomes. As a senior member of the team, you’ll help set the technical standard within ARC, support colleagues’ development and contribute to building new project opportunities. If you thrive in a collaborative environment, enjoy experimentation and want to work where your skills genuinely influence national-level decision making, this is the role for you. Your Profile We’re looking for someone who’s genuinely excited by the possibilities of Deep Learning and AI, not just in theory, but in how these tools can solve real, high-stakes problems. You’ll bring strong experience in applying advanced algorithms or a deep academic foundation in the field, along with fluency in modern programming languages like Python and hands-on familiarity with frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow. Someone who writes clean, reproducible code, thinks rigorously and isn’t afraid to explore new domains or tackle exploratory projects where the path isn’t always clear. The ideal candidate thrives in collaborative environments, communicates complex ideas with clarity and has experience leading projects or supporting others’ development. You’re comfortable making informed decisions, adapting quickly, and engaging directly with partners to refine their challenges into workable research questions. Above all, you bring curiosity, initiative and a commitment to high standards and be able to balance technical excellence with real-world impact while contributing positively to ARC’s culture and mission. Main Duties • Understand the problems of the Turing’s partners and develop appropriate approaches to solving these problems • Apply state-of-the-art Deep Learning and Data Science techniques emerging from the Institute, broader academia and industry to problems faced by the ARC partners • Perform rigorous investigations into new algorithms and applications, providing consultancy to inform our Partners’ decisions and developing high-quality proof-of-concept outputs which can be deployed in real-world situations • Design and carry out rigorous experimentation and development with some guidance from Senior and Principal staff, both alone and in small teams • Present, disseminate and explain our work via presentations, reports, and workshops • Work at pace, in a highly collaborative environment, using industry standard tooling for testing, version control and collaboration to create software artifacts that can be shared with Turing’s partners. • Contribute to a culture of technical excellence within the Institute, for example by leading sessions for internal reading groups. • Provide local technical project management and leadership for research projects, ensuring successful outcomes. Please see our portal for a full breakdown of the role.
