Being a part of Kent Fire and Rescue Service
Everyone is unique. Everyone has value. Everyone helps to make Kent Fire and Rescue Service a great place to work. We are one team. Together with our customers we are creating a safer future for Kent and Medway.
Being a Data Engineer
As a Data Engineer, you’ll play a critical role in driving a major transformation project—migrating our on-premise SQL Server data warehouse and ETL processes to modern, Azure-based services. Working closely with our internal development and data & intelligence teams, you’ll lead the migration of data processing workflows for operational incident data as part of a large-scale Command-and-Control system replacement.
Beyond this project, you’ll shape a standardised approach for future integrations, enabling seamless onboarding of key corporate systems across both on-prem and cloud environments.
What you’ll do
· Redesign and implement robust data pipelines leveraging Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, and related cloud services.
· Migrate and modernize existing assets, including SSIS packages, SQL stored procedures, and SSRS reports, into cloud-compatible solutions.
· Collaborate with stakeholders to capture data requirements and ensure seamless continuity throughout the migration process.
· Support the upskilling of internal Data and IT teams, providing guidance on developing, operating, and maintaining new technologies, as well as advising on long-term resourcing strategies.
· Maintain business-as-usual operations for the existing data warehouse and associated transformations, including bug fixes and minor enhancements, to ensure stability during migration planning.
· Working with the wider project team, including project managers, business analysts, and a Microsoft technology partner, to design a cloud-native data processing pipeline from the ground up.
· Deliver comprehensive documentation, training, and ongoing support to internal teams throughout the transition.
What you’ll bring
· Experience working with SQL (T-SQL, SSIS, SSRS and T-SQL development), Jira, Visual Studio and related tools
· Hands on experience with Azure data platform and associated technologies (Fabric, Synapse, Data Lake, Data Factory, Databricks etc)
· Experience developing Power BI dashboards and reports
· Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently on complex projects.
